Welmoet Boender's work concerns the development of Islam and Muslims in Europe, with a special focus on the Netherlands. She has built extensive expertise regarding the role of imams and female religious leadership in Dutch mosques, She currently finalizes a monograph and is guest editor of a Special Issue which explore the development of Islamic theology and imam training in Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. 

Welmoet Boender is Assistant Professor Islam Studies and Director of the Bachelor programs of the Faculty of Religion and Theology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

She has lectured at the universities of Utrecht, Leiden and Amsterdam and was guest researcher at Ghent university (Belgium). After her PhD, she worked at the Dutch NGO Oikos Foundation, where she co-developed the Knowledge Centre Religion and Development (KCRD). Five years later, she returned to the university, first as an assistant professor at Utrecht University and then at her alma mater, where she was in the unique position to co-develop the Leiden Islam Academy. 

Welmoet Boender is affiliated member of the Erlangen Centre for Islam and Law (EZIRE) at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg (Germany) and senior member of the Netherlands Interuniversity School of Islamic Studies (NISIS). She carried out her PhD studies at the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM). In the academic year 2017-18, she was fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS-KNAW).
